This tip sheet will teach you several different ways to fuse murrine in your projects to achieve very different results, and hopefully inspire you to play around with them in new and exciting ways! Murrine are a beautiful and versatile addition to any fused glass piece.

The picture above is a comparison between all four techniques used in this tip sheet – as you can see, you can get quite a bit of variety out of the same murrine! From top to bottom, they are:

• Simple Full Fuse
• Fuse and Flip Murrine
• Clear Dot Cap
• Tack Fuse

The kiln schedules used are included with each technique. Note that these are As Fast As Possible and so the results may vary somewhat from kiln to kiln. Also, they do not include a bubble soak, anneal, or slow cool, all of which might be desirable in other projects.

 1. Simple Full Fuse
Place Murrine on a double layer of 3mm glass and full fuse to 1500 degrees F.

• Quick and easy single firing. A popular way to fuse all our products.
• Works great for any base colors of glass.
• The top of the Murrine design tends to shrink a bit while the sides expand and flatten outward. Extra great for designs with stripes on the sides like our Peppermint Twist Murrine or Bellflower Murrine.

Full Fuse	Rate: Degrees/hour	Process Temperature	Hold - Soak
	As Fast As Possible	1500°F/815°C	25 minutes

 

2. Fuse and Flip Murrine
A two-firing process –

Step 1) Place Murrine on 1 to 2 layers of 3mm clear glass and full fuse to 1500 degrees F.
Step 2) Clean and flip the piece over. Fire polish (in this case to 1400 F) to remove the texture on the glass from the initial firing.

Bonus tip: Instead of fire polishing, directly full-fuse the clear layer over any base layer to add a layer of color.

• This process allows for a clear view of the expanded bottom of the Murrine pieces.

	As Fast As Possible	1500°F/815°C	25 minutes
	Remove from kiln, clean the piece, and flip it over
	As Fast As Possible	1400°F/760°C	20 minutes

 
3. Clear Dot Cap Fuse
A clear Dot is carefully centered on top of each Murrine before firing. Murrine is placed on a double layer of 3mm glass and full fused to 1500 degrees F.

• This technique causes the top of Murrine to expand and be magnified more than a simple full fuse.
• Works great for any base colors of glass.

 4. Tack Fuse
Place Murrine on top of two 3mm layers of glass, and fire to around 1400 degrees.

• The playfully raised surface adds visual and tactile texture.
• Works well with any color base glass.
