Fused Glass Tutorial: How to Make a Glass Pendant with a Hanging Bail

In this guide, we’ll make a fused glass flower scene on a clear glass circle. The pendant will also be fused to a bail to hang it easily for display or as jewelry.

Glass

• 1 fusible bail
• 1 2 inch glass circle
• Murrine of your choice
• Frit of your choice
• Stringer of your choice

Misc

• Tweezers
• Glasstac
• Small string for hanging (optional)

Two Firings - Step 1

We first need to fuse the bail to the glass oval. Since these need to be fully fused and the accessories will be fused at a lower temperature, we will fire the bail and the circle first.

1. Place the bail into the kiln.
2. Place the glass circle in the kiln so that one of the sides overlaps the split edge of the bail. Center the circle and bail as you wish. 
3. Close the kiln and set the kiln firing schedule #1.

Kiln Firing Schedule #1

Segment 1

• Rate: 9999 (as fast as possible)
• Temperature: 1450 degrees (F)
• Soak / Hold Time: 15 minutes

Additional Segments

Anneal and cool your glass as required for your kiln and project size.

Two Firings - Step 2

Arrange the stringer, frit, and murrine on the glass in the design you want.

1. Slowly put some glasstac on the glass shape. Don’t use too much because we want to avoid getting the liquid on the kiln shelf when we put it into the kiln.
2. Arrange the stringer, frit, and murrine onto the glass shape using tweezers. 
3. Once you’re content with the arrangement, place the glass back into the kiln and fire with schedule #2.

Kiln Firing Schedule #2

Segment 1

• Rate: 9999 (as fast as possible)
• Temperature: 1390 degrees (F)
• Soak / Hold Time: 15 minutes

Anneal and cool your glass as required for your kiln and project size.

Stringer and frit arranged on top of the glass shape.

One Firing - Step 1

Be aware that if you choose to do only one firing, the frit and murrine will lose more of their original shape and become more circular and blobby. This is because the bail and glass shape needs to be fused at a higher temperature.

Step 1

Arrange the stringer, frit, and murrine on the glass in the design you want.

1. Slowly put some glasstac on the glass shape. Don’t use too much because we want to avoid getting the liquid on the kiln shelf when we put it into the kiln.
2. Arrange the stringer, frit, and murrine onto the glass shape using tweezers. 
3. Once you’re content with the arrangement, place the fusible glass bail into the kiln and gently place the glass circle with your murrine in the kiln so that one side of the shape overlaps slightly with the bail’s split edge.
4. Continue to fire the the project with kiln firing schedule #1 below.

• Temperature: 1430 degrees (F)
• Soak / Hold Time: 15 minutes
